The Role:
The NW Natural Business Development team is driving an ambitious acquisition strategy and is looking to grow our high-performance team. NW Natural is seeking a Business Development Associate to help evaluate and execute transactions across the United States, including public and private sector water and wastewater utility acquisitions. The Business Development Associate will work closely with Business Development team members in the financial analysis of acquisition opportunities, with direct responsibility for managing M&A transaction and due diligence processes. Day to Day:
Lead due diligence coordination for a wide variety of deal types, specifically:
Developing and managing due diligence request lists
Setting up and managing data rooms
Coordinating logistics and site visits
Following up on information requests through prompt and professional counterparty communications
Documenting due diligence findings with keen attention to detail
Be a strong project management anchor for the team, maintaining constant momentum toward goals: identifying, communicating, and helping solve risks, red-flags, and/or roadblocks on behalf of the deal team
Support business development team across the transaction execution process
Gathering and analyzing information
Developing timelines with transaction milestones and ensuring timely completion of various workstreams
Proactively managing and communicating with multiple workstream leaders to complete due diligence
Creating summaries of due diligence findings and potential risks
Gain awareness and understanding of merger and acquisition transactions to build instincts and knowledge essential to assume more responsibilities over time, including:
Providing modeling and analytical support for the evaluation of corporate initiatives including mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, dispositions, new business segments and other opportunities.
Monitoring and researching market data and dynamics to assess trends and develop actionable insights and recommendations for senior management.
Performing financial due diligence and prepare valuation models as part of deal proposal packages.
Communicate clearly and professionally with stakeholders in a way that builds trust and reflects NW Natural values.
Collaborate across internal and external teams, including engineering, finance, legal, regulatory, etc. Come on your first day with:
Bachelor’s degree in business, public administration, or public policy, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master’s degree is a bonus.
Minimum 2 years of related experience in investment banking, private equity, management consulting, corporate development or similar experience performing financial modeling and analysis in the context of M&A.
Strong qualitative and quantitative analytical skills including the ability to analyze a wide variety of new business opportunities related to the utility sector (gas, water, electric) and energy industry more broadly.
Proven ability to critically evaluate information gathered from multiple sources, reconcile conflicts, deconstruct high-level information into details, abstract up from detailed information to a more general understanding
Demonstrated ability to be self-managed and apply skills in problem solving and decision-making.
Exceptional organizational skills and document management skills
Proven project management expertise and success, including managing complex stakeholder groups through critical path projects with timeline and budget constraints, proactively mitigating risks, and quickly developing successful strategies for navigating setbacks to reach goals
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the preparation of documents and presentations for varied audiences (board and executive team, potential counterparties, other external stakeholders).
Understanding of utilities, water industry, public-private partnerships, privatization and/or related businesses preferred
Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Computer work, some travel, occasional lifting of less than 25 pounds
This position would be based in Portland, OR under normal circumstances, but is currently a remote, virtual/home-based role

Base salary range: $77,900.00 – $107,850.00 per year, depending on qualifications
